GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE IN THE DELTA

November 18th, 11:00 am - 12:30 pm CT

The delta is a lot of things. It’s a landform, a geography, a multifaceted culture, and a place with its own unique challenges. Implementing green infrastructure in that context comes with its own challenges because it is intimately personal – it’s in your yard, on your street, and dotted throughout your neighborhood. It becomes a part of your life. Join us for a session exploring the exciting green infrastructure work occurring in New Orleans. This conversation will touch on the critical importance of building trust through intentional community engagement, achieving a critical mass for support, and recognizing a few hard truths.

RELAPSE OR RESILIENCE: HEALTHY COMMUNITY DESIGN

November 5th, 12:30 pm - 2 pm CT

This session will explore the ways in which COVID-19 has exposed gaps in our infrastructure that have exacerbated impacts of the pandemic and prompted us to re-think what is entailed in healthy community design. Speakers will provide insights into complex relationships between the built environment, social determinants of health, and health outcomes; case studies profiling successful efforts to address community health through land use and neighborhood planning; and the role healthy community design should play in COVID-19 recovery planning.

In this session our presenters will discuss climate change, public health, the economics of climate change, and the role the built environment plays in the radical changes needed to ensure prosperity and equity for all.

While Louisiana is implementing adaptation measures across our coast at an amazing pace, we must also embark on the complex work of mitigating the drivers of climate change. CPEX will have a conversation with Dr. Michael Oppenheimer, an internationally renowned climate scientist and author of International Panel on Climate Change Assessment Reports, will provide an overview on the most recent climate science, sea level rise predictions, and opportunities for greenhouse gas abatement in his keynote address to Louisiana. This address will be followed by a responding panel of experts to better understand how planning and intentional policy making can shift our community, economy and environment towards a more balanced and equitable, healthy, and prosperous future.

Climate Week at the 2020 Virtual Smart Growth Summit

North Baton Rouge has long experienced economic instability and limited job availability, similar to other African American neighborhoods throughout the United States. In this session, Maggie Anderson, author of Our Black Year and founder of the nonprofit The Empowerment Experiment, discusses the history and impacts of the commercial exploitation of Black neighborhoods and explores the reasons why Black businesses lag behind businesses of all other racial and ethnic groups in every measure of success. Mrs. Anderson will discuss how the social crises that disproportionately impact Black people and under-served Black neighborhoods could be countered through “conscious consumerism”.

This session also features a panel discussion with East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome and local experts working to redevelop and reinvest in North Baton Rouge. Panelists will explore the discriminatory laws, policies, and practices that perpetuate inequitable outcomes in Black businesses, and the actions that need to be taken to encourage policy change and transparency to support Black business ownership and prosperity and their role in neighborhood reinvestment.

PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE: URBAN ADAPTATIONS FOR UNCERTAIN TIMES

September 29th, 11 am - 12:30 pm CT

As a global pandemic challenges some of the core tenets of urban life, planners are asked to navigate an uncertain future. But haven’t we been here before? In this session we’ll explore how cities and people have responded to public health crises in the past, what tactical innovations we’re seeing in cities today, and what ideas have emerged as "no-regrets" wins that will help get us to a better future.
