Executive Director, Maricopa Association of Governments
Dennis Smith is the Executive Director of the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG), which represents 27 cities and towns, three Native American Indian Communities, and Maricopa and Pinal Counties. The Arizona Department of Transportation and the Chairman of the Citizens Transportation Oversight Committee also serve on the MAG Regional Council. Dennis has been involved in numerous regional achievements, including the development of the regional emergency 9-1-1 system, the development of several major transportation efforts, including Proposition 300, which funded the regional freeway system, and Proposition 400 which is funding street, transit and freeway projects. Other initiatives at MAG include forming the MAG Economic Development Committee focusing on making the MAG region and the Sun Corridor more globally competitive and working on greater political alignment for the Intermountain West and forming a megaregion with Arizona and Mexico. Dennis is a past member of the National Association of Regional Councils= Executive Directors Council and a member of the Arizona Council of Governments (COG) Directors Association, where he has twice served as Chair. He is a fellow-elect of the National Academy of Public Administration. Dennis obtained his bachelor's degree from Montana State University-Billings and his master's degree from Arizona State University.
